The Queen of England, Elizabeth II, has created her first post on the official Royal Family Instagram account, and may continue to post so that the public can follow her travels around the UK on royal engagements. The monarch used an iPad to share an image of a letter written in 1843 by inventor and mathematician, Charles Babbage, to her great-great-grandfather, Prince Albert, as she visited the Science Museum’s summer exhibition, Top Secret.

The Queen, who turns 93 next month, has not travelled abroad since 2015 as she now leaves overseas visits to her children and grandchildren. On that last occasion, she visited Malta and delivered a speech during the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Valletta.
The Royal Family has embraced technology, and images and details of the travel engagements taken by its members can be followed on various Twitter and Instagram accounts. It’s a pity the Queen didn’t have Instagram all along, as she has visited 117 countries during her 66-year reign and has travelled the equivalent of 42 times around the globe.
Thanks to the Clarence House Instagram account, we can follow the adventures of the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall. This will undoubtedly give travellers a great flavour of international culture, because Prince Charles went overseas the most on duty of all the Royal Family in 2017, racking up 172 official engagements abroad and 374 in the UK.

Then there’s the Kensington Palace Instagram account, which chronicles the life and work of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. As the younger royals, William, Catherine, Harry and Meghan carry out a lot of overseas engagements, including Meghan and Harry’s recent trip to Morocco, and this makes the account very interesting for travel-lovers to follow.

The Queen’s granddaughter, Princess Eugenie of York, regularly posts about her life and engagements here, although she got into trouble when she posted an image of her father, Prince Andrew, in a corridor of the palace that is off-limits to the public. She also posted about the exhibition of the outfits from her 2018 wedding at Windsor Castle.
