While Dubrovnik is typically considered a summer destination, wishing for it to be crowd-free, more and more travellers are heading over in the winter. In comparison to the year before, December 2017 saw a 15% increase in arrivals. As a token of appreciation to those who make the trip in the off-season, Dubrovnik Tourist Board is organising free city tours and folklore performances for the fourth year in a row.
Between 3 November, 2018 and 30 March, 2019, every Saturday at 10AM, a free city tour with an English-speaking guide will depart from the Tourist Information Centre on Brsalje 5, near the Pile Gate. The pre-registered guests will spend an hour-and-a-half discovering what lies inside Dubrovnik’s medieval walls, like the splendid Onofrio Fountain, the gorgeous Sponza and Rector’s palaces, and the enchanting Stradun. The tour will finish at the open-air Luža square, and will be followed by a performance of the traditional dances and songs by the local Linđo Folklore ensemble.
The Tourist Board hopes many will enjoy this complimentary program. Romana Vlašić, the Tourist Board director, spoke to Lonely Planet Travel News: “this winter, Dubrovnik will be excellently connected, with direct flights to seven European destinations [Frankfurt, London, Madrid, Rim, Barcelona, Warsaw, and Istanbul], plus the regular flights to Zagreb. With improved access, we expect to see an increase of tourists during the winter, especially from far, year-round markets like the USA, Japan and South Korea. In addition to the free winter programs organized by the City Tourist Board, we’d like to highlight the Dubrovnik Winter Festival which offers numerous music and entertainment events.”
If there ever was a time to plan a visit to Dubrovnik, now seems like a good one, doesn’t it?
If you are planning on taking this city tour, make sure to pre-register with the Tourist Board a day earlier, via phone or e-mail. For more information, visit the Tourist Board website.
