The Michelin Guide Tokyo 2019 has just been launched and Tokyo has maintained the top spot as the city the most Michelin-starred restaurants of anywhere in the world.

The new guide included one new three-star restaurant, three new two-star and 29 new one-star restaurants. If you love delicious meals but have a slightly smaller budget, there were also 44 new Bib Gourmand – a designation for good quality, good value restaurants – spots added to the guide.

With 230 starred-restaurants, Tokyo has earned its reputation as a destination for foodies. According to Michelin, “this tally of new distinctions cements Tokyo’s position as one of the world’s leading dining destinations, as it continues to offer something for visitors and locals alike, from high-level gastronomic experiences to good value eateries.”

While Tokyo boasts the most starred-restaurants, it is followed by Paris, Osaka, London and New York, so travellers can be sure to find great dining around the world.

This year’s edition also saw some interesting new additions to the Tokyo guide. For the first time, a restaurant serving up Okinawan cuisine in Tokyo made the list. Set across a string of islands, Okinawa cuisine differs from mainland Japan and can be enjoyed at Ryukyu Chinese Dining Tama. Another first, onigiri cuisine, or white rice formed into triangular or cylindrical shapes and usually wrapped in nori, made it into the guide with the addition of Onigiri Asakusa Yadoroku.

But travellers don’t need to be beholden to the recommendation in the Michelin Guide in order to sample the delicious food available in the city. There are plenty of ways to plan the ultimate foodie day in Tokyo.
