What you’ll see inside LA’s Academy Museum when it opens in 2019

By Adenekan

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will open in LA later this year and now film lovers know what to expect when the highly-anticipated museum starts greeting visitors.

The museum, which is dedicated to the past, present and future of cinema, has released new details about its inaugural exhibitions. With a working title of Where Dreams are Made: A Journey Inside the Movies, the long-term exhibition will explore “the evolution of film from its beginnings to its possible futures”. There guests will be able to learn about the development of the art and science behind movies from silent films to modern blockbusters. The 30,000-square foot exhibition will teach visitors about how films evolved and are made, and the impact of cinema on society. Artefacts from the Academy’s incredible collection of film-making history – like the ruby slippers from Wizard of Oz – will be on display.

The first temporary exhibition will be focused on Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, presented in collaboration with the filmmaker’s Studio Ghibli. The massively influential filmmaker is behind works like My Neighbor Totoro (1988) and Spirited Away (2001). This will be the first major exhibition of his work presented in the US, and will include more than 200 concept sketches, character designs, storyboards, layouts, cels, backgrounds, film clips, and immersive environments.

In fall of 2020, that exhibition will be followed by Regeneration: Black Cinema 1900–1970, which will explore the history of African American filmmakers in the development of American cinema. According to the museum, “the exhibition’s goal is to redefine American film history as it elevates this under-represented aspect of artistic production and presents a more inclusive story”.

In addition to those exhibitions, the museum will host a major work by Tokyo-based interdisciplinary art collective teamLab, which will be a “site-specific, real-time, ever-changing environment that allows the viewer to engage directly with the artwork itself”.

More information about the exhibitions will be released closer to the museum’s opening. The Academy Museum also made Lonely Planet’s list of the best new opening for 2019.
