Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical Hamilton has been a sell-out smash in the US, Puerto Rico and the UK and now, finally, it’s heading to Australia.
New South Wales premier Gladys Berejiklian announced on Wednesday that Sydney will host the multi-award winning Broadway hit at the Lyric Thearte from March 2021, after fighting off fierce competition from Melbourne and Brisbane to secure one of the most anticipated shows to arrive in Australia.
Berejiklian was joined by Hamilton creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda in sharing the good news. “Thank you to everyone in Australia who’s been asking for Hamilton. It’s on its way and we can’t wait,” said Miranda.
Hamilton is one of the biggest cultural phenomenons of the past decade. It’s a hip-hop chronicle of the rise and fall of US founding father Andrew Hamilton and the making of America. Lauded by critics and adored by fans, it’s runaway success, selling out in Broadway, in other US cities and, most recently, in London. It also travelled to Puerto Rico, where creator Miranda has roots, to raise money for hurricane relief efforts.
Hamilton’s original Broadway producer Jeffrey Sellers will produce the Australian show, alongside Michael Cassel, who’s behind the Australian production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child now playing in Melbourne. Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Cassel said he’d love to see a diverse cast in Australia, just like the London and New York shows, with indigenous Australians performing in lead roles.
