White leather L-shaped sofas, widescreen TVs and wooden floors are just some of the interior design features planned for Lufthansa Technik’s new commercial Airbus.
Travelling on a commercial airplane, even if you have the opportunity and the means to be bumped up to first class, will always look and feel like, well… travelling on a commercial airplane. No amount of fully-reclining seats, extra storage space, in-flight bars or pinkish-purple LED mood lighting will disguise that fact. Still, engineers and designers are testing boundaries all the time. Earlier this year Airbus and Zodiac Aerospace developed sleeping berths that could fit into aircraft’s cargo compartments.
These new design concepts could very well introduce a new era for flying… for the moneyed elite. Lufthansa Technik AG has also been testing boundaries by developing a VIP cabin interior concept for Airbus’ smallest commercial family, the A220. The German company released renderings of the plush cabin ahead of the official showcase at this year’s European Business Aviation Conference and Exhibition (EBACE) in Geneva.
The spacious SkyRetreat concept features an unconventional design approach that could rival any five-star hotel or luxury yacht with white leather L-shaped couches, rugs, wooden floors and orb-shaped lamps in the main cabin, as well as a ‘feature wall’ decorated with a woodland scene. There’s luxury accommodation, too including twin beds for travellers to sleep on, with drawers in the base to maximise storage space. The cabin interior even features discreet cabin technologies, from 4K roll-up televisions that emerge from a side compartment and smart touch surfaces.
“Although the A220 represents the new entry level of our completions offerings, it already provides an incredible amount of space for breathtaking VIP interiors,” states Wieland Timm, senior director sales, VIP; Special Mission Aircraft at Lufthansa Technik. “Our SkyRetreat concept makes optimum use of this spacious cabin and its technical features will provide our customers with a whole new sense of space and a unique travel experience.”
