Jackie Kennedy Onassis’ former summer estate in Martha’s Vineyard is up for sale and her daughter Caroline Kennedy is overseeing the listing.
Red Gare Farm, the 340-acre estate where the Kennedys routinely summered is on sale for a cool $65 million through Christies International Real Estate. Located on a more than a mile of private Atlantic beachfront, the home has been treasured and preserved by the family for 40 years. When Mrs Onassis purchased the Aquinnah property in 1979, she was drawn to the untamed beauty of the property’s coastal dunes, freshwater pools, and the abundance of plants, trees, birds and other wildlife.
“Forty years ago, my mother fell in love with Martha’s Vineyard,” said her daughter Caroline Kennedy. “When she found Red Gate Farm, it was a perfect expression of her romantic and adventurous spirit. The dunes and ponds and rolling hills of Aquinnah gave her the chance to create a world where she could be so close to nature, close to her family and friends, and, most importantly, close to her beloved books.”
The main residence has five en-suite bathrooms, two half baths, a chef’s kitchen equipped with professional grade appliances, two offices or artist studios. While the two-storey guest house has four bedrooms, a kitchen, living room and laundry. Outbuildings include two garages, a caretaker’s house with three bedrooms, a boathouse, a storage building, and a hunting cabin. There is also a pool and tennis court on the property.
Martha’s Vineyard, an island south of Cape Cod, is an exclusive playground for the ultra-wealthy and famous. But it’s also a place of laid-back beaches, fishing villages, rolling hills and country inns. At Red Gate, Mrs Onassis created a home away from home for her family, even building a fairy treehouse for her, now grown, grandchildren. The Kennedys treasured this property for three generations and Caroline Kennedy says she hopes the new owners will do the same.
Red Gate Farm is being listed by Christie’s International Real Estate.
