Sydney’s best beaches will soon be connected by a stunning 80km coastal walk

By Adenekan

Plans are underway in Sydney to create an incredible new 80km coastal hike between two of Australia’s best known beaches.

The proposed trail would run between Bondi and Manly beaches and would take in some of the country’s most epic landmarks. During the course of the walk, hikers will experience spectacular beaches, lush landscapes, Aboriginal art and architectural wonders. Upon completion, the team behind the idea promise it “will become one of the world’s great urban walks”.

The highlights of the Bondi to Manly walk include:

Camp Cove
Vaucluse and Elizabeth Bay House
Mrs Macquarie’s Chair
Sydney Opera House
Harbour Bridge
Curlew Camp
Aboriginal culture sites

Some stretches of the hike are already completed but the new proposal would see them all linked up with clear directions for walkers and plenty of signs to give background to the significance of the landmarks.

So far the councils who have the proposed route running through them have reacted positively to the plan, not least because the route is fully proposed for land that is already publicly owned, meaning there would be little to no disruption to private citizens.

Lachlan Harris, one of the people behind the initiative, told the Daily Telegraph “we’re sitting on a world-class walk right here in Sydney. The walk sits on what is widely accepted to be the greatest natural harbour in the world and it takes in four of the six most iconic places in the nation. It doesn’t need infrastructure or to disrupt anyone’s existing use of the land. It just needs explanation, a bit of promotion and some modest waymarking in the form of little symbols to keep walkers on track.”

You can keep up to date with the coastal walk’s development or donate to their advocacy work online.
