The islands of the Maldives are dotted with incredible retreats, but the end of 2018 saw a new addition grab the spotlight when a solar-powered private island resort was named the world’s best new luxury hotel.
Kukadoo Maldives Private Island, a 15-residence private retreat, opened in December but has already been named the best new luxury hotel for 2018 by Luxury Travel Intelligence (LTI). The resort features private overwater residences over the Lhaviyani Atoll, so guests can sleep above the Maldives’ famous turquoise waters. The island is completely solar-powered and has a number of other eco-friendly features, with an emphasis on sustainable building materials and environmentally conscious activities and dining.
Once guests leave their private residences, they can head to The Retreat, which is a central spot where they can relax, dine and socialize. The building features a solar-paneled roof that turns the bright sun into enough energy to support the fifty residents and one hundred staff who can stay on the island at any time.
The resort also has a 44-square-metre infinity plunge pool and guests have access to a private butler. They can also embark on adventures, enjoy luxury meals, and relax in the Maldives’ first Himalayan salt chamber.
While the Maldives have become synonymous with luxury, travellers don’t have to break the bank to explore the islands. Lonely Planet named the Maldives as one of best value destinations for 2019, thanks to an increasing number of affordable food and accommodation options.
