Speed between Moroccan cities on Africa’s fastest train

By Adenekan

A new high-speed train in Morocco – which has been described Africa’s fastest train – will make it easier to travel between the cities of Tangier and Casablanca.

The AI Boraq High Speed Train was inaugurated last week by Moroccan king, Mohammed VI and French president, Emmanuel Macron. The train will speed up the trip from Tangier to Casablanca from four hours and 45 minutes to just two hours and ten minutes. The trip from Tangier to Kenitra will be reduced to 50 minutes from three hours and 15 minutes, and Tangier to Rabat will be only one hour 20 minutes instead of three hours and 45 minutes. It will also mean that travelling between Tangier and Marrakesh will go from a ten-hour journey to just four hours and 45 minutes.

While the train is hoped to help boost the ongoing development of the two hubs, it will also be welcomed by travellers trying to get around Morocco in the least amount of time as possible.

The port city of Tangier – located just across the Strait of Gibraltar from Europe – has long served as a gateway for Europeans travelling into Africa. Today, the city is going through rapid development and modernisation, but is still home to historic sites like the Kasbah Museum of Mediterranean Cultures and the Grand Socco. Casablanca is similarly a bustling city and a hub for both business and creative industries. There are also a number of large construction projects underway in the city, like redevelopments at Place Mohammed V and the Parc de la Ligue Arabe.

Travelling by train is already a popular way to see Morocco, as there is an excellent train network that is also quite affordable. Find out more about travelling Morocco by train.
