Seattle’s tiny second airport wants to offer a boutique flying experience

By Adenekan

Seattle has just opened its second airport, a two-gate, 30,000-square-foot terminal that is servicing 24 daily flights to nine destinations. The new passenger terminal at Paine Field is located 30 miles north of downtown Seattle in Everett, Washington, and is a private partnership between Propeller Airports and Snohomish County.

Passengers are now able to fly on 18 Alaska Airlines daily flights from Paine Field to Portland, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, San Francisco and San Jose. United Airlines will begin flying six daily flights on 31 March to Denver and San Francisco. Up to now, those flying to and from Seattle had to go from the busy Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, but now they have the option of the $40 million new terminal designed by Fentress Architects.

Paine Field was originally constructed in 1936 as a Works Progress project. At the time of development, it was envisioned that the airport would create jobs and economic growth in the region by becoming one of the ten new “super airports” around the country, but the large commercial airport that was planned never materialised back then. Today, it is home to the Boeing assembly plant and other aviation-related activities, including the Flight Heritage & Combat Armor Museum.

The new airport terminal will offer valet parking and a concierge desk, and the TSA security checkpoint area will have three lanes. The main waiting area has two fireplaces and comfortable seating, and there’s various food and beverage options and a pet-relief area. Other nice touches include fresh flowers, complimentary morning newspapers, and floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the Olympic Mountain. There is also waiter service throughout the passenger lounge, electrical outlets and USB ports at every seat, and high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the terminal .
