Rottnest Island, in the azure seas off the West Australian coast near Fremantle is a must for any Australia itineraries, partly for its 63 stunning beaches and gorgeous walking, cycling and snorkelling trails, but really to see the quokkas! But now travellers have another reason to jump on the ‘Rotto’ ferry: the opening of Discovery Rottnest Island retreat nestled in the sand dunes behind Pinky’s Beach.
The new eco-accommodation Discovery Rottnest allows visitors to stay longer and fully immerse themselves in the island’s spectacular natural environment in low-impact, high-quality safari tent accommodation.
The car-free island is a Class A nature reserve popular with Perth and Fremantle locals. However the most famous locals on Rottnest Island is the population of resident quokkas, a cute mini-marsupial known as the ‘happiest animal on Earth’ due to their friendly nature and smiley faces.
Rottnest Island is easily accessible by ferry, just 45 minutes from Hilary’s Boat Harbour in Perth and 30 minutes from neighbouring Fremantle. Alternatively, you can opt to arrive in style by helicopter or air taxi or cruise across in your own boat.
Discovery Rottnest Island comprises 83 high-quality eco-tents with ensuite pods, connected via elevated walkways to the Pinky’s Beach Club complex. The $20 million luxury glamping resort also features a swimming pool, alfresco bar and dining area.
The retreat offers five different accommodation options ranging from the Base Camp which includes a private ensuite and an outdoor deck to the Deluxe Tent which includes a walk-in wardrobe and floor to ceiling glass doors. Tents start from $183AUD per night based on two people sharing.
Also on the horizon on Rottnest, this the redevelopment of Hotel Rottnest, which overlooks Thomson Bay. It will double in size adding 80 rooms to its current offering. The hotel will be re-branded as the Hotel Rottnest Resort and will include four pools, a restaurant, function rooms, gym and rooftop bar. The refurbishments are scheduled to be completed in 2021.
