Situated in what was once a bunkhouse for hunters and fly fishermen in the 1920s, Eastwind Hotel & Bar is marrying the idea of a boutique-style stay with the intrigue of an outdoor experience in the Catskills Mountains.
While there are 19 rooms inside the hotel, the three Lushna Cabins and outdoor wood barrel sauna are an extra incentive for city dwellers to flock to the newly opened property. The triangular-shaped, 163 square foot cabins are the epitome of glamping (that’s glamorous camping to the uninitiated) with luxuries like queen beds, Frette linen, BBQ kits and a private bathroom.

“The cabins are available year round and are equipped with insulation for the winter months,” Eastwind Hotel & Bar owner Bjorn Boyer told Lonely Planet. “We have seen that the Lushna Cabins have been just as popular in the winter as they are in the summer.”
“We were definitely inspired by the destination – the beautiful scenery and landscape of the Catskills – as well as Scandinavian design elements, which are defined by simplicity and minimalism,” Boyer added. “Guests are excited to stay in accommodations that are comfortable and accessible, yet offering all the most appealing aspects of camping and being connected to nature. And, of course, everyone wants to get the photo opportunity for an Instagram post.”

If you’d rather witness the panoramic views from inside, a ‘Bunk House’ or ‘Hill House’ guest room with a fireplace and access to woollen blankets, Apothecary kits, wireless speakers, espresso machine, bikes and a library of reading books might sound more like your cup of tea. For any budding writers out there in search of solace, the hotel also offers two ‘Writer’s Studios’, boasting a wooden desk and a vintage-style typewriter. And, naturally, solitude.
The aim for the programming at the hotel is to bring the great outdoors inside – and vice versa. Guests can expect a full-service bar, outdoor decks, a fire pit, cosy movie screenings, small outdoor concerts and even an occasional farmer’s market (check in with the hotel’s ‘happenings’ for scheduling). This being the Catskills, outdoor activities such as skiing, horseback riding, fly fishing, hiking and biking are also all on the doorstep – and all just a mere two-hour drive from New York City.
