Backcountry campers may head into the wilderness for a chance to disconnect, but technology can first play a vital role in finding the perfect spot to pitch a tent in the US.

Tentrr is a website that lets campers rent fully set-up camping and glamping sites on private land, similar to Airbnb. Now, the company has announced that it has added additional options for travellers who might be looking for a more rustic experience. The new ‘Backcountry’ option will allow campers to rent sites on private land that have no existing infrastructure, allowing users to bring their own tent and equipment for a true camping experience. The benefit of being on private land is that the sites can be in secluded areas, on lakes, rivers, beaches or even mountains.

For travellers who may not have everything they need for the perfect trip, the landowners can also rent out camping equipment like pop-up tents, sleeping pads, coolers, kayak or bicycle rentals, or even sell guests things like farm fresh eggs and vegetables with “Tentrr Extras.” The prices to rent the spaces starts at $25 (€22) per night.
Michael D’Agostino, the platform’s founder, said in a statement, “we were inspired to add backcountry sites to our platform because we ran across so many incredible places to camp but for one reason or another we weren’t able to install our signature fully-equipped campsite. However, we still wanted our campers to have access to these incredible camping spots.”

For those who prefer their tent already set up, Tentrr’s “signature sites” are equipped with an elevated wooden platform with a canvas-safari style tent, queen-sized bed, wood stove, Adirondack chairs, picnic table, fire pit, grill, sun shower and a camp toilet. There are currently 500 signature sites around the US with another 500 to be created in 2019.
Tentrr isn’t the only website trying to make it easier to plan your summer camping trip. Hipcamp, a similar website that lets users book private land, recently added campsite availability data for federal campsites, so its users can see in real-time whether there is space in places like Yosemite or the Grand Canyon.
