Enjoy San Jose’s summer nights with movies under the stars

By Adenekan

When San Jose’s weather starts to get hot, the city fills up with activities for the last three months of the year, full of great events like movies under the stars, a favorite one for locals and tourists. Last summer, outdoor movie screenings became popular in San Jose so, this summer, many restaurants, museums and open spaces got ready for film fans looking for a great night out.

Daniel Chacón, a local movie enthusiast thinks that movie specials are one of the best things of summer. Last week, he enjoyed the outdoor screening of the classic movie The Shining in the backyard of the restaurant 50mm GastroPub, in Barrio Los Yoses, downtown San José. He got together with some friends and his girlfriend to have a night under the stars watching, as he says, one of his favorite movies. “The Shining is the first movie my girlfriend and I saw together when we started dating, so when we knew the Gastropub was going to screen it, we knew we had to go”, he said.

Every Thursday, locals get together to enjoy international and local movies, like The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas and A Clockwork Orange, the two movies that are going to be screened during the first and last weeks of November. Guests can get tickets for the event at the bar for ₡2.00 (US$4) and can eat and drink anything they want during the movie.

For Daniel, it is the first time he and his friends have experienced the joy of an outdoor screening. “We saw the event on Facebook and we wanted to go because, besides the movie, the place has a great patio with lights that go from tree to tree and it’s kind of romantic. They also have this great roofed area, just in case it rains or if its still too cold, and the food is really good,” he told Lonely Planet.

The French Association in San Jose screens movies every Friday at its Barrio Escalante’s headquarters, broadcasting French and independent movies inside its rooms and on the patio. Also, the museum Museo del Jade, in downtown San José will be showing local movies during November and December, at Islas del Coco. This event is unique because the films are shown inside the museum, so it is a wholly cultural experience. All the movies are subtitled at the events, so people can enjoy the original language of each film as well. Other movie-related activities can be found at CineArte every Thursday, and every week at Centro de Cine, both local cinematography associations for true movie-lovers.
