Persia, present day Iran is a country in the middle-east officially called the Islamic Republic of Iran. The country derives its name from the Parsa, a nomad community who originated from Central Asia.
One of the reasons for Iran’s popularity as a travel destination is the richness of its culture and history. The first king of Persia was Achaemenes, and the Persian ruling dynasty were then called the Achaemenidis. Perhaps, Persia is best known for its king, Cyrus II. During his reign, the Persian capital was at Parsagadae. After a brutal war with his opponents, Cyrus expanded the Persian boundary to cover the land between Anatolia and current day Afghanistan. He developed a close relationship with the neighbouring Medes.
Why visit?
A visit to Iran calls for a clarification of the role of Cyrus in Iran’s political rise in Middle-East politics and the sophistication of its people. Iran is a recommended destination for students of history and culture.
Cities
There are many excellent destinations in Iran – Tehran, Mashhad, Isfahan, Karaj, Tabriz, Shiraz, Ahvaz, Qom, Kermanshah, Urmia, Rasht, and Zahedan. Each of these provincial cities has its own unique attraction and culture that go back to the Persian Empire. Iran is known for its rug and carpet industry and each design the province of origin.
Sacred destinations
Iran has many holy sites that serve as good destinations for tourist. The country is also attractive for its mountains and the Caspian Sea.
Hospitality
Above all, Iranians are hospitable and very friendly people. They cherish their cuisine and are excellent hosts. I have always enjoyed my visits as a devoted student of culture and peoples.
Transportation
There is a good transportation network in Iran. However, driving your own vehicle requires exceptional skills to safely maneuver the rather busy city roads with too many vehicular and human traffic. I would advise hiring a local driver. Rail transportation is efficient and very useful if you wish to travel to provincial destinations. Stay safe.
