An exhibition dedicated to Nelson Mandela has opened in London

By Adenekan

In tribute to his leading role in ending apartheid and establishing democracy in South Africa, a new exhibition dedicated to Nelson Mandela has opened in London. ‘Nelson Mandela: The Official Exhibition’ is running at 26 Leake Street Gallery, and when it closes in June, it will go on a worldwide tour, eventually being permanently installed in Mvezo, Mandela’s birthplace.

The exhibition explores the life of the world’s most famous freedom fighter and political leader. His story is told in a series of experiential galleries and immersive presentations, starting from his rural childhood home in the Eastern Cape, where he was steeped in the tribal traditions that shaped him. It continues through his years of turbulent struggle against the apartheid regime, and on to his eventual vindication and final years.

One of the producers of the exhibition is Mandela’s grandson, Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela. Christo Brand, his prison warder on Robben Island became a lifelong friend, and he has donated objects for the section of the exhibition devoted to the leader’s prison years. Visitors will be able to see previously unseen film clips and photographs, as well as authentic artefacts and personal possessions that have never before been seen outside South Africa.

His journey to becoming a globally-loved and respected figure is explored in new, personal and revealing ways, with exclusive stories from Mandela, his family and those that knew him best. The exhibition is designed to help visitors understand how Nelson’s inner strength, compassion and faith in humanity enabled him to forgive and make peace his life’s mission.
