Sleep inside a womb at this London hotel

By Adenekan

If you have trouble sleeping while travelling, a new hotel in London has bedrooms resembling wombs that are designed to aid your slumber. The Zed Rooms has what it calls “woom” apartments, which have been designed to encourage positivity, relaxation and REM-rich sleep – the type of slumber that promotes learning and creates dreams.

The apartments have been designed to engage with every sensorial touchpoint of the body, so the furniture’s rounded edges and softened corners mimic the sensation of bed, while rocking chairs are on hand to lull guests into a relaxed state of mind. They have muted lighting, soft pink walls, high-tech mattresses and temperature-regulating pillows and duvets, and the piece de resistance is a cocoon-like bed, inspired by the safety and snugness of the womb.

The apartments feature restorative scents and colours that relax muscles, invoke calm and mimic the moonlight, as well as air-cleansing soporific plants to eliminate toxins and healing background harmonies to unwind. There are bespoke sleep recipe suggestions, rich in serotonin, melatonin and tryptophan, created in partnership with celebrity favourite, Detox Kitchen.

Each apartment also comes complete with yoga mats and meditation sessions via the iPad’s Calm app, and there’s a second bedroom, draped with ethereal fabrics and artwork to transport the mind. “If you’ve ever noticed that you don’t sleep as well in a hotel, you’re not alone,” says Hope Bastine, resident sleep psychologist at sleep technology company, Simba.

“Scientists recognised the ‘first night effect’ over a decade ago, where one half of the brain unconsciously acts as a ‘night watchman’ staying more alert when in unfamiliar surroundings. With this in mind, tapping into the emotional and physical, no stone has been left unturned trying to soothe the effects of this in the design architecture of our new cutting-edge sleep retreat.”

The apartments are a collaboration between Simba and design-led serviced apartments Cuckooz, and are available to book in London’s Tech City, Shoreditch. Stays at The Zed Rooms start from £190 (€211.68) per night, and you can book at reservations@cuckooz.co.uk.
