Sleep in an igloo for your chance to have an authentic Arctic experience

By Adenekan

If you have ever wanted to experience sleeping in an igloo, you can try out an authentic Arctic experience in Greenland. The new Iglo Lodge in in Ilulissat has just been launched, and it offers guests the opportunity to sleep in one of its five traditional, hand-built houses made from ice.

Each igloo can sleep two people, making the lodge the perfect location for pairs or groups of up to ten people. There is no need to worry about being cold, as the igloos come complete with reindeer skins, specialist warm winter sleeping bags and a petroleum lamp on a night table. A cosy wooden cabin is on site, containing bathroom facilities and communal area where meals are served. Although outside temperatures can drop well below freezing, the igloos remain around zero degrees Celsius – making sleeping in the specialist outdoor equipment more than comfortable.

According to Arctic travel specialists, Off the Map Travel, staying in an igloo strips back the luxury to bring guests back to nature. The company offers tailor-made travel itineraries that include accommodation at the Iglo Lodge as well as snowshoeing, snowmobiling and two Northern Lights safaris. “The best Arctic adventures are all about experiencing authentic moments and creating lifelong memories, and this is one that delivers on both,” says founder Jonny Cooper.

“As soon as you enter the igloo you can see the craftmanship that goes into its creation, a skill that’s been passed down through the generations. And then to lie back and sleep there just as Innuits have done for thousands of years before is a really special moment.”
