A new luxury train experience will take travellers on a journey through Australia’s south-eastern corner, linking the cities of Adelaide and Brisbane.
Winding between the two coastal cities through Australia’s interior, Great Southern is the newest addition to a series of luxury rail journeys in the country, including the Ghan, which travels from Adelaide to Darwin, and the Indian Pacific, which connects Sydney and Perth. The Ghan is considered one of the world’s greatest train journeys, taking travellers on a stunning journey into Australia’s Red Centre. It’s so famous that it was recently the subject of a 17-hour ‘slow TV’ broadcast where viewers could experience the trip from the comfort of their own homes.
Now, the Great Southern route will run a three-day northbound itinerary or a four-day southbound itinerary through a very different region of the country. The three-day trip from Adelaide to Brisbane will give guests the chance to get off the train and experience the amazing Grampians National Park, the nation’s capital of Canberra, and the northern New South Wales coast. Travellers heading south can take part in an incredible beachside dining experience in northern New South Wales, an immersive day in the Hunter Valley and Newcastle region, and a chance to see Victoria’s iconic Twelve Apostles.
The train’s first season will begin in just over a year on 6 December 2019 and will end on 27 January 2020. There will be 16 departures, two trains and 28 carriages that can take 214 guests on each journey. The sleeper trains offer up single or twin cabins, and the “more exclusive” platinum cabins. Of course, there will also be plenty of “exceptional food and wine” to keep you happy on the journey.
The luxury trip won’t come cheap – the fares start from A$1649 (US$1190) per person for the single accommodation and at A$3899 (US$2815) per person for platinum. However, that includes dining, beverages and excursions off the train. If you’re ready to plan your holiday for next year, tickets go on sale 3 December, 2018. Find out more here.
