Forget Black Friday – the best day for flights may be Travel Day Tuesday

By Adenekan

Thanksgiving season in America is now as synonymous with shopping as it is with turkey. From Black Friday to Cyber Monday, there are plenty of deals to be found, but if what you really want this year is cheap flights, then perhaps it’s best to wait for Travel Deal Tuesday.

The airfare comparison app Hopper has found that, based on historic flight prices, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving brings with it the highest volume of fare sales. Dubbed Travel Deal Tuesday, the company notes that last year they recorded more flight deals on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined. Does it sound too good to be true? Well, Hopper notes that airlines offer discounts because the demand for flights drops after Thanksgiving, generally because most people have already booked their holiday travel, but have yet to plan a winter holiday for the New Year.

Last year, about 20% of domestic and international routes had deals – including an average savings of $310 on flights to Lima, Peru, and $250 average savings on flights to Auckland, New Zealand. According to Hopper, there will be significant discounts this year, like 41% off flights to London, 36% off to Barcelona and many more savings. There are also plenty of airlines that are openly promoting discounts, like Cathay Pacific, which will offer promotional fares form the US to Asian destinations and Australia and New Zealand. Icelandair will offer discount fares to Reykjavík–Keflavík Airport, while Philippine Airlines is offering discounts to spots like Manila, Tokyo, Singapore, Bangkok, and Seoul.

The Hopper app analyses flight prices, and according to the company, predicts prices with 95% accuracy. Last year on Travel Deal Tuesday, it sent out 43% more deal notifications than average. If you want to get in on the savings, Hopper notes that users can download the app to browse deals and set alerts for destinations you are interested in.
