If you ever hitchhike anywhere in the world, you always hope that whoever picks you up will be going as far as possible in the direction you’re heading. And if they’re not a serial killer, that’s an added bonus. Luckily for one guy trying to get from Brisbane to Byron Bay, a distance of approximately 170km, he managed to thumb the ride of a lifetime.
Musician Scott Hildebrand, who is originally from Chicago, had arrived from Mexico to tour Australia and was hoping for a lift. He eagerly accepted when a black van stopped to pick him, his guitar and his surfboard up, and was astonished to discover that Thor actor and Chris Hemsworth and his personal trainer, Luke Zocchi, were in the car. They were also on their way to Byron Bay, as Chris and his wife Elsa Pataky are finalising their new mansion there.
In a video posted to Hemsworth’s Instagram page, musician Scott is seen to be visibly delighted when Chris jokes with him that he will need to chip in four grand,” for the gas, and he discovers that they are actually travelling to their destination by helicopter. He later told the Brisbane-based breakfast show Ash, Kip and Littsy with Susie O’Neill that he had been waiting by the side of the road for 15 minutes and it was his first time hitchhiking.

Scott is then shown in the front of the helicopter with the Hollywood star in the back, as the fantastic scenery unfolds beneath him. Then, as they are saying goodbye on terra firma, Hemsworth jokes with Scott that the dream is over and he’s back to regular hitchhiking. “So grateful for this crazy experience,” Scott posted later on Instagram. Chris is such an awesome dude!!
As Chris is an Australian tourism ambassador, it would be fair to say that he definitely rolled out the welcome mat for this visitor in style.
