British Airways will launch a twice-weekly summer service from Heathrow, making it the only airline to fly direct between Europe and Charleston. Currently, travellers visiting from Europe must fly into Atlanta, Georgia, which is more than four hours’ drive away.

The flights will begin from 4 April, with return fares starting from £600 in economy and at £1920 in business class. The flights will run Thursdays and Sundays, leaving from Heathrow at 5:20 pm, arriving into Charleston at 9:20 pm that evening. The return flight will leave Charleston at 10:50 pm and arrive in London at 11:50 am the following day.

Charleston is known for its old-world charm – and a tumultuous past that saw the city built on slave labour and the first shots of the American Civil War. While people visit to stroll cobbled streets and admire the Victorian architecture, there are also places to learn about the darker parts of the city’s history, like at the Old Slave Mart Museum.

But it’s also a top destination for foodies, who will find an array of culinary styles drawing on the city’s roots in Europe, the Caribbean and West Africa. For any travellers dreaming of a summer getaway, Charleston is also close to some of the most famous beach communities on the East Coast, like Myrtle Beach.

British Airways has also recently launched flights to Nashville and New Orleans, and earlier this year announced a new route to Pittsburgh. With the launch of the new Charleston route, the airline will be flying to 29 US destinations next summer.
