London’s Serpentine Pavilions are one of the world’s most prestigious architectural commissions and a major tourist attraction. Now, for the first time, one of those structures is visiting the US.

Madrid-based architecture firm SelgasCano designed a criss-cross network of rainbow tunnels that’s now on display at La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles. The candy-coloured Instagram playground is open to the public and will host a range of talks from musician and filmmaker David Lynch to Netflix, the World Wildlife Fund, Universal Music, Frieze LA and charities such as the American Youth Symphony and Inner City Arts.

Originally designed in 2015 by SelgasCano, the 866 sq ft structure premiered as part of the Serpentine Gallery’s annual installation, which selects a design firm to build a customised structure in London’s Kensington Gardens that’s used as a public and learning space by day and a platform for live programs by night. Previous commissions include Zaha Hadid (2000) and Bjarke Ingels (2016). This is the pavilion’s first visit to the US – LA will be its only stop – and it’s being hosted by co-working space Second Home and the Natural History Museum.

“LA is a city that we’ve fallen in love with,” Sam Aldenton, the co-founder and co-CEO of Second Home, said. “It’s an open and collaborative city with a horizontality – both physically and metaphorically.” Aldenton added that he sees it as “an authentic way of saying hello” to the city, as Second Home will soon open its first location in Hollywood, in a space that will also be designed by SelgasCano.

The SelgasCano Pavilion is open daily between 11am and 7pm (and until 9pm on Fridays) until November. All events will be free and open to the public.
