With the much-anticipated Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge now open at Disneyland California, the next exciting project for the Walt Disney Co. is dedicated to the Marvel superheroes.
The company has reportedly obtained permits for the expansion of a land at Disney California Adventure, themed around the superheroes of the Marvel comics and movies. According to the Los Angeles Times, more than $14 million (€12.47 million) will be spent on the expansion, adding a retail outlet, a microbrewery and a character meet-and-greet area. There is already a Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! ride at the park, and the popular A Bug’s Life area has been closed to make room for the expansion.
Based on one of the permits, it is believed that one new attraction may be an interactive ride based around Spider-Man. This tallies with Disney mentioning on its blog in 2018 that Spider-Man and the Avengers will feature in the immersive superhero universe. Disneyland Paris recently presented its general ideas for an upcoming Marvel-themed land in 2021, which include attractions featuring Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp. It is currently hosting Marvel Summer of Super Heroes until 30 September, where super heroes will take part in a live-action super-production featuring dramatic special effects and projections.
Other attractions are planned for Walt Disney Studios Park in Paris in 2020, and the Epcot park in Florida in 2021. The latter’s Guardians of the Galaxy – Awesome Mix Live! is currently running, featuring Guardians and their alien band playing timeless classics from the ’70s and ’80s five times daily until 18 August. The Marvel effect has also spread to Disneyland Hong Kong, as it recently opened an attraction, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Nano Battle!, which join its Iron Man Experience, and it plans a further Marvel-themed expansion in 2023.
