After bringing his hit musical Hamilton to Puerto Rico for a run, Lin-Manuel Miranda is back promoting the best of the island to travellers around the world. The actor, composer and playwright teamed up with Discover Puerto Rico to create an eight-episode series showing off his favorite places and things to do on the island, and here are some of the top picks.
Old San Juan
As the district celebrates its 500th anniversary this fall, the historic region of the capital is a good place to admire brightly-colored buildings and cobblestone streets. It includes the World Heritage site of El Morro, and has museums, restaurants, shopping, nightlife and more.
Coffee farms
With its climate and topography, the central region of Puerto Rico is growing into an important coffee region. Travelers on the island can head straight to a farm and sip a perfect cup at a “hacienda”.
Isla Verde
With beaches, hotels and plenty of restaurants, Isla Verde is a go-to beach destination within the metro area. It’s also easy access from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport.
Vega Alta
The home of the Miranda family, this is where Lin-Manuel spent summers during his childhood. The town has a small plaza, La Placita de Güisin and a mosaic that were created in memory of his late grandfather, Luis Miranda Sr, also known as Güisin.
Salsa
For anyone looking to delve deep into the culture, salsa is the choice of the musically-inclined Miranda. The island is full of places to dance and enjoy salsa music.
