The world’s first 360-degree infinity pool could be built above a skyscraper in London

Plans are underway to build the world’s first rooftop 360-degree infinity pool on top of a skyscraper in London.

UK-based pool manufacturer, Compass Pools, unveiled an architectural concept for Infinity London, a 600,000-litre pool that would top a 55-storey hotel in the capital. The pool would allow visitors to feel like they’re floating above the city’s skyline, making it the ultimate pool with a view in London. Compass Pools describe the structure as “the only building in the world to incorporate a 360-degree infinity pool.”

The swimming pool will be made from cast acrylic rather than glass and will feature transparent sides and floors. Guests will access the pool through a spiral staircase that rotates and rises through the water. To make sure it stays at the right temperature and water doesn’t splash onto the street below, the pool will be linked to a computer-controlled building management system.

“The pool’s inspiration came from my need to create something truly spectacular and groundbreaking in the world of swimming pool design,” Compass Pool’s swimming pool designer and technical director Alex Kemsley told Lonely Planet. Kemsley and his team of designers plan to fit the pool with lights that will glow and change colour when the sun goes down, making the building appear like a “jewel-topped torch.”

Compass Pools says it will have a five-star international hotel on the top floors and the rooftop pool will be used by its guests. If all goes to plan and partners and contractors are confirmed, construction could begin in 2020. First, however, the company needs to figure out how to transport 600,000 litres of water to the top of a 55-storey building.
