Many big museums around the world have started one after the other to offer free admittance, and the latest institution to join the list is the Museum of Contemporary Art of Los Angeles.

At its annual benefit evening, which served this year as a sort of 40th birthday party for the museum as well, MOCA received a US$10 million dollar donation from the president of its Board of Trustees, Carolyn Clark Powers. The museum’s direction has announced that money will go towards making access to the MOCA’s twin venues, the MOCA Grand Avenue and The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, completely free.
Admittance to the museum ranges as of now from $8 (€7) to $15 (€14), and it’s free on Thursday evenings. The donation will allow MOCA to make it always free until 2024 at least, while also giving the museum’s management time to figure out a way to make this change permanent and increase its accessibility, something that has always been in the museum’s top priority goals.
“We are not aiming at having more visitors or larger attendance, but we’re aiming at being more accessible, at having open doors,” commented the museum’s director Klaus Biesenbach in a statement. “As a civic institution, we should be like a library, where you can just walk in”. The donation will certainly help towards building this civic-minded vision for MOCA.

It’s still unclear when the free admission scheme is supposed to start since it will require some changes before it can be implemented— namely more security since the free admission is bound to bring in more visitors. It might take some months, so keep an eye out on the museum’s website for updates.
