1 June is National Trails Day, and the American Hiking Society is aiming to set a new world record this weekend for most people improving trails in a single day. Events are happening around the country to get people out and helping to maintain the trails. In addition to trail projects, there are guided hikes, festivals and even after parties. The hiking society notes that people need no experience in order to take part.

“The government shutdown earlier this year had a negative impact on public lands and the trails we love, so American Hiking Society is rallying the trails community for a record-setting day of trail service,” said Kate Van Waes, executive director of American Hiking Society, in a statement.

The goal is to bring together hikers, cyclists, equestrians, and paddlers with the trail system and public lands. Some of the trails in the US are widely known, like the Pacific Crest or the Appalachian trails, however there are endless places to hike around the country. To find the event closest to you, check out the National Trails Day event search page.
