If you’re a foodie and your holidays take you to Lake Garda this summer, there’s a restaurant there that has been named as this year’s “one to watch.”
The Miele One To Watch award by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants recognises a fantastic restaurant that is outside the top 50 list at present, but has the potential to rise. This year it has chosen a family-owned Italian restaurant as its rising star on the global dining scene for 2019. Ristorante Lido 84 will receive the award at The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2019 awards ceremony at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore on 25 June.
Prior to opening in 2014, the restaurant was previously a retro ‘lido’, or outdoor swimming pool, owned by an elderly lady and her family. Now owned by chef Riccardo Camanini and his brother Giancarlo, who runs the front of house, the brothers respected the site’s heritage when they purchased it and made few changes to the original building. They used the colours of the lake as inspiration for the interior design, and the dining experience is enhanced by the views over the water from the outdoor terrace.
The restaurant’s culinary philosophy takes inspiration from the surrounding landscape of Lake Garda, including raw mountain milk used to produce Fior Di Latte ice cream, Bagòss cheese for tortellini dishes, pike from Lake Garda, and lemons and wisteria flowers from the hills for the desserts. “We are inspired by the concept of beauty,” says Giancarlo. “Beauty manifests itself in so many ways: not simply interior design, table settings, gardens or the place in which the restaurant is located; we also see beauty as working together as a family, which is reflected in our team members, some of whom have been with us since the launch of our restaurant in March 2014.”
According to Dr. Axel Kniehl, executive director of marketing and sales at Miele, the judges were impressed at the journey the entire Lido 84 team has travelled so far and their dedication to deliver such a “unique and delightful” dining experience.
