The US is uniquely diverse when it comes to dialects, with the country’s vast history of people coming from all over the world to settle there influencing how the accents sound from coast to coast. There’s always plenty of debate around which accents are the most attractive, so to find out which ones were considered the sexiest in the US, travel company Big 7 conducted a survey of 1.5 million social media followers.
It ranked the 50 states from most to least attractive, with Texas taking the top spot and Long Island taking the bottom place. The results found that four of the top 10 sexiest accents were linked to northeastern states, with two coming from the south and two from the midwest. Who can resist a slow Texan drawl? Not the followers of Big 7, clearly, as they voted it into the top spot. The typical Texan accent is a “southern accent with a twist”, with strong letter r and plenty of ‘Howdys.’ It was followed in popularity by the Boston accent, one of the most imitated and parodied accents. The rest of the top ten included 3. New York 4. Maine 5. Chicago 6. Mississippi 7. Hawaii 8. Philadelphia 9. St. Louis and 10. California.
The bottom spots were 41. Pennsylvania (Dutch) 42. Cincinnati 43. Pittsburgh 44. Florida 45. Ohio (southern) 46. California (valley) 47. Alaska 48. Minnesota 49. New Jersey and 50. Long Island. People from Long Island, or ‘Lawnguyland’ might be disappointed to learn that their accent was voted least sexiest accent, but the thing to remember is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and every accent is music to someone else’s ears.
