The right drink can transport us at least virtually: sipping a chilled glass of rosé can make us feel like we are in sun-washed Provence overlooking a lavender field, and after an Aperol Spritz or two it’s aperitivo hour at a patio overlooking Venice’s Grand Canal.
But pack your bags for an unexpected drink trend gearing us all up for summer vacation.

At Here & Now, a swanky travel-themed bar in Los Angeles, Acapulco Bleu is a large format cocktail mixed with Arette Reposado Tequila, Combier Bleu, lime and pineapple; it comes to the table in a large suitcase garnished with bendy straws and paper umbrellas and served with a ladle and cups for four happy imbibers. Owner Sarah Meade says the libation was inspired by the gorgeous beaches and high energy vibe of Mexico’s Pacific Coast resort town – and the presentation is a representation of that escape. “A suitcase makes the perfect vessel because it inspires some wanderlust and makes guests think about faraway places,” she says.

In nearby Burbank, cocktail den The Green Room created The Short Round as an homage to Indiana Jones’ loyal sidekick in the Temple of Doom instalment of the film. Bar manager Ryan Smith stirs Macallan 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky with Dolin Blanc Vermouth and Suze Saveur d’Autrefois; it’s placed in a suitcase over a bed of wheatgrass along with a dry ice-filled smoking skull, rubber snake and cherry-orange gelée that’s served in the “cup of a carpenter.” “Just like Indiana Jones, who travels the globe fighting off snakes and bad guys, so does this cocktail that is served in an adventurer’s suitcase to match,” Smith notes.
Have bubbly, will travel.
