First direct flight to be launched between the US and Cape Town in December

By Adenekan

There’s good news for anyone planning to travel from the US to Cape Town, as a new non-stop flight will be launched three times weekly between the two destinations on 15 December. Up to now, flights from the US required a layover in another city, but United Airlines plans to launch the only non-stop flight from Newark Liberty International Airport, pending the US Department of Transportation’s approval.

As well as saving the time that would have been spent on the layover, the new flight will decrease the current travel time from New York to Cape Town by more than four hours. This means that it will take 14 hours on the way over to Cape Town, and 16 on the way back. The plan is to operate it with Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft featuring 48 business class seats, 88 seats in economy plus and 116 seats in economy.

There is so much to enjoy in Cape Town, including Table Mountain National Park, Company’s Garden, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and Green Point Urban Park. Visitors can view the African penguins at Boulder Beach, try tandem-paragliding off Lion’s Head and abseil from the top of Table Mountain. Within an hour, they can exchange Cape Town’s urban landscapes for the charming towns, villages and estates of Winelands destinations, such as Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

“We’re thrilled to announce the addition of Africa to our global route offering,” said Patrick Quayle, United’s vice president of International Network.
