Amid the honky-tonk bars in downtown Nashville there’s a new hotel complex where guests can relax by throwing axes, playing shuffleboard or sitting back with a drink on a rooftop bar that opens out on to the dazzling skyline of Lower Broadway, Music City’s most famous strip.

Downtown Sporting Club opens today by local restaurant group Strategic Hospitality on the site of the former Carter Hardware store on Lower Broadway. The three-storey space features a hotel, multiple restaurants, bars and sporting areas. According to co-founders Benjamin and Max Goldberg, it’s a place where guests can spend all day, from enjoying breakfast in the morning to a nightcap at the rooftop bar, with the hotel’s slogan “From Rise Till Rest’ summing up the aim of the venture.

On the first floor is Carter Assembly (named after the previous proprietors) where guests can check in, fuel up with espresso drinks from Nashville’s Crema Coffee Roasters and enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner from 7am to 2am, seven days a week. There’s also the Ribbon Club, a more upscale restaurant on the first-floor, inspired by the swanky supper clubs of the 1940s, with a menu of classic American dishes such as whole roast chickens, roasted oysters and centre-cut pork chops with buttermilk.

The second floor is the R.E.C. Room (named after Richard Edward Carter who built the building in 1949), a sports bar with décor inspired by a vintage game room. Outside there’s AstroTurf lawn, outdoor furniture, and custom-designed games, including corn hole, croquet and shuffle board; as well as cards, trivia, and other nostalgic game options. There are also 12 axe-throwing lanes and coaches on hand to guide players through correct throwing techniques, as well as keeping score and taking food and drink orders.

The hotel is located on the third floor and features 20 guest rooms, four of which boast floor-to-ceiling windows that look directly onto Broadway. All rooms include private bathrooms complete with Le Labo bath products, Casper mattresses, blackout shades, free Wi-Fi, flat screen television, robes and hair dryers and tickets for free coffee from Carter Assembly.

“We love the 411 Broadway building, it’s where Benjamin and I started our partnership 12 years ago and preserving local ownership on Lower Broadway is a real passion of ours,” said Max Goldberg, co-owner of Strategic Hospitality. “We are beyond words excited for the new opportunities and offerings we will provide at Downtown Sporting Club and its respective venues, from axe-throwing to epic multiple bar offerings, to guest rooms to stay in. We believe this will be a great addition to Lower Broadway for tourists and locals alike.”
