In a tranquil region of the Dominican Republic that’s barely touched by tourism, the all-inclusive Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda will later this year launch a new resort featuring four boutique villages.

Set among 93 sandy acres, five-star Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda will feature four boutique villages – Caribbean Paradise, Explorer Cove, Emerald Jungle and Archipelago in one upscale resort. Holding a prime waterfront location on Playa Esmeralda beach, it’s the first resort in the emerging Michès region, a quiet fishing town that stretches along the Dominican Republic’s northeast coast.

Emerald Village is an adults-only wellness retreat that’s part of Club Med’s Zen Oasis concept. Everything in this part of the resort embraces nature, fitness and wellness. There are some really lovely experiences on offer here like treetop yoga sessions and rooms are located close by the resort’s spa and fitness facilities.
Archipelago is another adults-only village in the resort but this one is focused on romance, making it ideal for couples and newlyweds. Archipelago guests are accommodated in the exclusive Oceanfront suites, complete with a private pool, outdoor shower and private section of the beach.

For families, there’s Explorer Cove which offers a “treasure trove of activities” for all age groups in a playful and relaxed atmosphere. Meanwhile, Caribbean Paradise is the “heart of the resort” where guests can enjoy poolside activities and nightly shows and unwind in colourful rooms nestled in the resort’s lush tropical gardens.

While Michès has yet to appear on the tourist map, it’s home to some pretty spectacular sports including Montaña Redonda, a rugged mountain known for its famous swing that offers breathtaking views of the ocean below. There’s also Salto de la Jalda, the tallest waterfall in the Caribbean and Samaná Bay, a popular site for humpback whale spotting.

Club Med said it’s devoted to sustainable practices in both the construction and management of the resort. One such practice is a tree re-planting programme where every tree removed to make way for the resort’s foundation will be re-planted in or around the resort area.
The hotel earned its BREEAM certification after complying with strict environmental standards during the construction process. The resort’s daily operations will perform under the Green Globe certification to meet the highest standards of sustainability when it opens its doors in December. Guests are also encouraged to learn about sustainability through educational mini-sessions, alongside a community garden where they can learn about gardening, recycling and other sustainable actions.

Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda is set to open in December. Not only is it the first operating resort in Michè, but it’s also North America’s first new Club Med resort in more than four decades.
“This will be our very first Exclusive Collection resort in the Americas, and the first-ever resort for this region,” a Club Med spokesperson told Lonely Planet Travel News. “We are highly anticipating its opening this December.”
